Comparison

[edit]

The two phones are built around the same A20 Pro chip and the same storage tiers, and both carry the IP68 rating with a 6-metre depth, but the Duo's chip sits in a new package bonded to a vapour chamber that Apple says improves sustained performance.[3][2][6] The Pro Max has one 6.9-inch display; the Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says is about 50 percent larger than the Pro Max's.[2][6] The Duo weighs 5 g more, is 2.5 mm thicker when closed, and is 3.5 mm thinner when open.[3][2]

The camera systems favour the Pro Max. It has a 48-megapixel telephoto at 100 mm with an 8× optical-quality crop, a variable-aperture main camera and an 18-megapixel front camera, whereas the Duo has no telephoto lens, a fixed ƒ/1.6 main aperture, and a 12-megapixel outer front camera plus an under-display camera on the inner screen.[2][3] The Duo's fold-dependent features, such as Duo Preview, rear-camera selfies and Duo FaceTime, have no counterpart on the Pro Max.[1]

The Pro Max keeps Face ID and dual eSIM, while the Duo uses Touch ID in the side button and eSIM only; the Duo is due to gain Apple Pencil support in a later software update, which Apple has not announced for the Pro Max.[2][3][1] The Duo's frame is titanium against the Pro Max's aluminium unibody.[1][2] At 256 GB the Duo costs US$700 more, and at 2 TB the gap is also US$700.[4][5]
